4 generation project

KENYA

Project run by Sveva Gallmann. Initiated in September 2003 and is based on the Laikipia Nature Conservancy. The project aims to preserve the endangered traditional tribal knowledge and culture of the inhabitants of the Laikipia region of Kenya and awaken a sense of pride in their African identity. The project involves all family age groups across four generations, belonging to the tribes of Kikuyu, Turkana, Pokot, Kalenjin, and Samburu. Children of primary school age are inspired to inquire into their own past, legends, myths and ancient knowledge. Days out with all tribe elders assist the children to learn about traditional music, dance as well as animals and plants, such as medicinal plants that are found in the wilderness. The project encourages all the necessary skills that are paramount to each of the tribe’s existence.
